FIX

Most forwarding companies operate by delivering shipments to their destination within an appropriate time frame. Sometimes, however, there is a need to deliver the shipment within a specific time, often within a few hours. This is the case when, for example, unloading or loading requires the use of additional means, e.g. cranes or trucks. The term FIX can mean a specific date and time of goods unloading, therefore in most cases it is the guarantee of the courier company's timely arrival at the client's premises.

What is FIX transport?

The term FIX refers to a specific date, time or range of hours when the courier delivering the shipment will arrive directly at the destination. As a rule, a FIX shipment involves only the setting of a basic range of times or dates, and less frequently the setting of a specific time. The date is binding for the courier company, so exceeding it equals a breach of contract in some cases, especially if it was concluded between two business entities.

The basic scope of the FIX date refers to the moment when the receiver can unload the shipment, so usually the fulfillment of this condition by the courier company means the moment when the delivery courier appears at the place of collection. Sometimes, based on individually drawn up agreements, it also occurs to determine the date of FIX loading. Usually such agreements are used by companies that need to have specific equipment or persons to carry out the loading process. This is why the premature arrival of a courier company representative is not always the optimal solution.

Why is the FIX deadline necessary in transportation?

A FIX deadline in transportation is necessary when the unloading or loading of goods requires additional resources, or the hiring of new employees, or the creation of a suitable passage that conflicts with the current situation in front of the company's facility. For many companies, getting goods to the site is a very large undertaking that involves a lot of logistical hassle, so untimely delivery, which includes arriving at the site prematurely, can be very problematic or dangerous. Most transport companies only set a maximum delivery time in their basic contracts, while more specific contracts include a specific time or a very narrow time range.

It should not be forgotten that the FIX deadline in transport is one of the most respected provisions in contracts, since its non-fulfillment is associated with large financial sanctions for the courier company. Timely delivery of shipments is therefore a priority and should always be treated with due respect by the shipper.

The FIX deadline is one of the most respected provisions in the contract concluded with a courier company. It is worth getting to know its principles and application.
