Cargo
Many people wonder what cargo means in Polish. The definition of this word is very simple, as cargo is nothing but a load, which refers to goods placed on a vehicle for transport. The term cargo includes loads that are not permanently fixed to the means of transport, including items placed in load carriers. These include various types of containers or crates.
Cargo - the basic transport classification of cargo
Every cargo, i.e. freight, has its specific biological, chemical, physical or physicochemical characteristics, which are of great importance in the transport process. Carried and transported objects are often exposed to various changes, as well as to damage, which is why the logistics of each operation and the use of correct technologies and modes of transport, adapted to the type of cargo, are so important.
It is worth noting the most important criteria that help to make the right classification. These include natural susceptibility, i.e. all cargo sensitive to transport conditions and time, which also includes dangerous goods. Additionally, of equal importance is technical susceptibility, i.e. the set of external characteristics and internal properties of the cargo (e.g. solids, liquids or gases), and the basic loading methods - whether the cargo is filled, piled, lifted or hauled. The size of the cargo also matters, which can be divided in terms of small, full truckload and oversized cargo. It is also worth mentioning the economic susceptibility of the cargo, which in this respect is divided into low-, medium- and high-value cargo.
Which cargo characteristics can be distinguished?
Each load has certain characteristics that must be taken into account when packaging or transporting it. Among the most important characteristics and properties are physical structure, density, melting, solidification and boiling point, as well as consistency. In addition, the content of individual ingredients and the resistance to damage, including bending and compression, are also important. All this information will help to properly plan the entire transport process, so that the cargo arrives at its destination intact and its transport is completely safe.
Cargo durability is also a very important issue, as cargo may be sensitive to the duration of the transit, absorption of odours, the impact of mechanical energy, moisture, temperature and light.
Types of cargo
Cargo, which includes all tangible goods (raw materials, semi-finished products, finished goods or materials) moving along the supply chain, can be divided into types:
- full container, which fills the whole container,
- in transit, between export and import customs clearance
- oversize, whose dimensions and/or weight exceed the standards for transport,
- optional, which may be an alternative to the object of loading or may be delivered in exchange,
- in bulk, without packaging, in dry or liquid form,
- heavy, whose weight exceeds the maximum allowed in the transport for a normal charge,
- refrigerated, requiring temperature control and suitable cooling conditions,
- full containers, filling the entire load area of a vehicle,
- smaller than a container, not filling its entire capacity.
