COIL

The English word "coil" in transport refers to a large spool of winding material, often weighing up to several tons. It can be raw material such as metal sheets for further processing at the destination, as well as long coils of cables, wires or strips made of steel. The high weight of coils means that not all forwarding companies provide this service. It requires several necessary means of transport and proper training of people who have direct contact with the coil. Properly prepared fastening methods and many other requirements will also prove necessary.

What is COIL in transport?

COIL is one of the most difficult transport operations in the haulage industry as it involves a lot of dedicated logistics. Very heavy coils weighing up to a dozen or so tons are difficult to unload and load, and the multitude of requirements for the vehicles delivering them to the site makes this service available only to specialised companies. Most often, coils are transported in the form of metal sheets or strips which are wound on a spool of appropriate capacity. Spools are inevitably round, which is why they require appropriate protective measures during transport.

These include the characteristic trough, a depression in the floor of the semi-trailer, which prevents the spool from moving across the entire load area. To ensure stability in COIL transport, chocks and stanchions fixed in special sockets are used, which in combination provide basically the highest level of cargo security. It is also advisable to fasten the coil with a strong enough tape, usually made of steel, which prevents the coil from unwinding during transport. Each company that transports coils has its own internal arrangements, which allow the transport to be carried out with the highest level of safety.
