How to facilitate transport management in your company?
Planning transport activities for companies large and small requires a lot of preparation and prior market research. Many of them use an internal department dedicated solely to logistics, while others decide to use a third-party company with the appropriate facilities.
All measures to facilitate transport management should focus on, among other things, the creation of an efficient and economically justifiable route, as well as the lowest possible price in relation to the scope of work carried out. For many companies, the transport of goods is the core of their business, which is especially true for companies involved in the production, manufacturing and distribution of their own goods.
You can't do without buying the right transport vehicles
A basic element of an efficient transport system within one's own company is the number and capacity as well as the type of transport vehicles available. There are several basic groups of vehicles used by both small and large production or manufacturing companies. By far the most popular are trucks, which have a huge payload, thus reducing the unit cost of delivering a product to its destination. Their disadvantage, however, is a very large investment associated with the purchase of the vehicle itself, as well as its further maintenance. Trucks are not suitable for smaller companies, as they can take too long to fill up for maximum efficiency.
Full-size vans are also very popular. They have considerably less interior space than trucks, but they are also significantly cheaper to buy and are a less financially burdensome investment than a truck. In addition, they are characterised by lower maintenance costs, including significantly lower fuel consumption and smaller external dimensions, thanks to which they can reach practically any destination, including the very centre of a large city. At the other end we have VANs, which differ from delivery vans mainly in their lower load capacity. Most of them have the same length and width as standard passenger cars, and the only difference is the large cargo space behind the second or first row of seats. The biggest advantage of transporting goods with a VAN is the very low unit price and minimal investment. On the other hand, the disadvantage is limited loading space, which makes it impossible to deliver a large amount of goods to the destination.
It is worth analysing the expenses incurred for transport
For obvious reasons, the most important is the relation of costs to the value of transported goods. It is important to know that with every additional cost, the unit price of the goods sold by the company increases, and in order to remain competitive, it is necessary to ensure the lowest possible transport price.
In every enterprise engaged in the manufacture or turnover of goods, it is necessary to remember about the costs of purchase of a given means of transport, its depreciation, current maintenance, as well as all other amounts related to the operation of transport. It is also necessary to take into account the salaries of drivers, as well as of persons involved in the loading and unloading of goods at the destination (depending on the transport policy of the company). The costs of organizing the transport of goods in a particular company are also strongly influenced by the fees for halls and warehouses.
